Home Away From Home for People with MS
The Erskine Holiday Home based at Frankton, Otago was built by the Southland Multiple Sclerosis Society in 1976 for the care and comfort of its members, this affordable, disability friendly holiday home is now available to the public.
During public and school holiday’s use of the Erskine Holiday Home is reserved for the Society’s own members, but for the rest of the year it offers spectacular views of Lake Wakaitipu. People with MS and others with disabilities pay just $30.00 per person per night, with a nightly charge of $10.00 for their carer/s. Additional adults are $ 10.00 per person per night, children stay for free. A deposit of $ 20.00 is required when making the booking and this is deducted from the final payment. (Please note that these costings are subject to change without notice).
Erskine Holiday Home is close to the main road for bus services, and also handy to Queenstown’s airport, hospital, and New World supermarket. Many other shops can be found in Frankton, just a kilometre away.
There are safe concrete footpaths between the home and shopping centre for those who wish to take a stroll or drive a mobility scooter.
Surrounded by mountains which are visible from every room, the Erskine Holiday Home has three bedrooms.
One has a double bed, another a hospital bed and a single bed, and the third bedroom has two singles.
This is a roomy home with a large lounge area (including a warm north-facing conservatory), a large kitchen/dining area, and a bathroom with an accessible shower and toilet. Passageways throughout the home are wide enough to enable the easy use of a wheelchair.
Equipment in the home includes an automatic washing machine, clothes drier, fridge, electric range, microwave, colour TV and video, telephone, manual wheelchair, shower chair, commode, walking frame, and a colour TV in the main bedroom.
Guests need to bring their own sheets, pillowslips, towels, bath mats, tea towels, and personal hygiene items.
Lakes District Hospital is nearby and provides a district nursing service from Monday to Friday. Prior arrangements should be made with the hospital if nursing care will be needed during your stay.
During school holidays and public holidays, when the house is not required by any Society member, you can make a standby booking.
From Christmas to Easter, and over the school holidays, rental is usually for a period of a week or less. At off peak times, visits of up to a fortnight can be arranged.
